Overview

Energy sources including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, or thermal can be hazardous. During the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment, the unexpected startup or release of stored energy can result in serious injury or death. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) failure to control hazardous energy accounts for nearly 1 in 10 serious accidents in many industries. This awareness level training module provides an introduction to hazardous energy, why it needs to be controlled, and how to keep yourself and others safe when equipment is being maintained, serviced, or started up.

Module length:  approximately 15 minutes

People completing this training module should:

  1. Understand what hazardous energy is and why it needs to be controlled.
  2. Know how to stay safe when equipment is undergoing maintenance, service, or start up.
  3. Understand how to keep others safe when equipment is being maintained, serviced, or started.
  4. Successfully complete the Knowledge Checks.
